ID Flow Honing

Abrasive flow ID honing is a precision finishing process used to improve the internal surface quality of metal tubes, especially those made from stainless steel or other alloys.

Abrasive flow ID honing uses a custom media that flows under pressure throughout the part to achieve a smoother ID finish. The media, similar to a “putty” substance, contains an abrasive that takes the shape of the inside of the part under pressure.

Using pressure and temperature variations allow the internal dimensions of the part to be very finely polished or deburred more uniformly and with greater accuracy. This also allows for an ultra-smooth finish in more complex parts with harder to reach places.

The media can remove less than .001” of material on the internal dimensions. Surface finishes are subject to the abrasive being used and can vary depending on the customer’s specification.
